WOMEN TO WATCH

BRIDGETTE MAYER

Founder, Bridgette Mayer Gallery

I STARTED MY BUSINESS BECAUSE…

I had a lot of experience working for art galleries, nonprofits and museums and realized I had hit a ceiling on the salary I wanted to earn. That was my “aha” moment; if I really wanted to make more money and have more responsibility, I would have to be the CEO and have my own business.

MY VISION…

I felt that other galleries weren’t focusing on emerging artists and giving them quality, well-curated exhibitions. My career was just starting and I wanted to grow with the artists I was representing. In the beginning I had five and my dream was to have the best emerging artist gallery in Philadelphia.

SOMETHING I WISH I KNEW STARTING OUT…

I started the gallery so quickly. I didn’t have time to meet with an accountant or attorney to get set up on the level that I should have. About a year after opening, I had to backtrack and hire professionals to help me with accounting and bookkeeping.

TAKING RISKS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE…

They help you to keep growing. There is fear when you are about to step into something new, but challenges in my business have been my greatest teacher and greatest reward.

MY FAVORITE ARTISTS…

Jean-Michel Basquiat, Caravaggio and Germán Goméz.

WHERE I FIND INSPIRATION…

The Barnes Foundation and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia.

THE NEXT BIG THING IN THE ART WORLD…

Virtual art fairs from around the globe and new art-viewing technologies.
