HOW I STARTED MY BUSINESS…

My parents bought me a sewing machine for Christmas in 2004. I had no desire to learn how to use it and let it sit around for months. One day I decided to play around with it; I bought fabric and made a handbag just to see how it would turn out. It was so cute! So I decided to make a few more for friends and family. I sold 10 in one weekend — that was my “a-ha” moment.

MY FIRST BREAK…

Was being featured on a popular blog. I had 10,000 hits on my website and was inundated with emails. I would go to work from 9AM to 5PM and then stay up until 4AM to finish all the orders. I knew something had to give; at the end of 2010 I decided to devote myself to my company full-time.

BEING YOUR OWN BOSS...

Definitely has its perks. Being in control of my day is a great thing. But you’re also always working when you are an entrepreneur. There are no days off.

PEER-TO-PEER MENTORSHIP IS KEY BECAUSE…

This world is big enough for everyone to have their own lane. The fashion industry is tough, but there are people who help each other out — almost everyone I have approached has been willing to help me.

MY ADVICE FOR ENTREPRENEURS STARTING A BUSINESS…

Have passion and believe in yourself. You will work harder than you have ever worked, especially in the beginning. It takes a lot of energy and sacrifice, but it is worth it. The only way to fail is to give up.
